Natural Horrors

Who needs horror flicks/books when we have natural horror stories?!  Of course, there are all the stories we can read or hear about in the news (the stories circulating about the little girl in Hickory are enough to curl anyone's toes) or on any of the shows on the ID or TruTV channels.  Good grief, look at the Countess Bathory!  While much of the stories about her are now myth rather than reality, there is still a great level of truth to the myths.  Then we read about Mary, Queen of Scots.  While I've known the story for a long time, I've never read the detailed account of her beheading.  Wow.  It took 2 swipes of the axe the sever her head.  Her mouth twitched for 15 minutes after her beheading.  Her little dog, found up under her skirts, sat down next to her body where her head had recently been!!!!

Gore!  Horror!  Stuff nightmares are made of are all in our natural history, yet we act as if history is the worst subject on the planet, next to English!  But think of it!  If it wasn't for reading stories in English classes, we wouldn't read about such an interesting woman like Mary, Queent of Scots, nor would we learn--and remember--such detailed British history!!!!!

It reminds me of the time on The Andy Griffith Show when Andy had to backpedal and teach Opie and his friends how interesting history is and he proceeds to tell the story of the beginning of the American Revolution in such a way that the boys all went home and finished reading about the American Revolution in their history books, making them more than ready for the next day's lesson with Miss Crump!

If only we'd all realize how INTERESTING learning is in ALL areas!!!!!!!!

  1. Mary, Queen of Scots story is gruesome. Not only her execution, but the explosion that killed her husband Henry Stuart.

I feel that part of the reason events turned about as they did was that Mary spent so much of her childhood away from Scotland. She wasn't entirely in touch with the wishes and needs of her people. And with Scotland going Protestant and Mary being a staunch Catholic, that just made matters worse.

I can't help but wonder what would have happened if Mary had remained in Scotland instead of going to France. Would Scotland have remained Catholic? Would she have remained Queen instead of abdicating in favor of James? Would the course of history been altered? No one can ever know.

  2. I agree, about horror films becoming more of a reality in today. There is so much violence reported on the news, its like watching a horror film. Especially about that lady who recently killed her husband, by stabbing him 200 times. That right there is a horror itself.

  3. I agree. It is sad all of the things happening around us. It gets me so upset reading about the young girl in Hickory. Why did her parents treat her like this and not the other kids? Why did they not just give her up?-Atleast, she would have not lived in an abusive environment. The stories are so sad and I will never understand how people can be so cruel.

  4. I think natural horror is wayyy more spookie than the flicks we see in movie theaters. I agree the news makes me feel like im living in a terrible horror movie. Like the story with Zarah Baker, thats worse than anything Hollywood could come up with...

  5. Learning interesting? Who would of guessed? As sad as this may sound i agree with you i may procrastinate a lot and complain about most of my homework but when i get to an interesting point in my life of learning i somehow always find a way to etch it into memory. For example i remember when i first watched the Letters of Iwojima (my mother checked it out from the Lenoir Ryhne Library for work on her 150 Page Thesis she has to do to graduate with honors) I had never been very interested in the pacific front of WWII until this. It showed the horrors that the Japanese faced from the Americans and showed that both sides were doing things like torture and collecting pieces of humans (such as ears) as trophies and if they would have just stopped and thought about how both sides had endured so much and that they were all human they could have stopped so much bloodshed. Instead they all have that government controlled tunnel vision that says kill the enemy no matter what the cost, thus forgetting that they are all human and have things that make them so much alike such as families and friends.
This is one of the most horrifying things i have ever had to contemplate. How one human can have no remorse or guilt about ending another person’s life for a cause that is the "governments" and they never once stop to realize they all endure the same things in their everyday life and are in no way different.

  6. Learning is very interesting:) I love learning and I've learned to value it in life. Of course, some classes are boring, but that all depends on what teacher or classmates you have to spend the semester with.
I know I complain about reading a lot, like a lot! But it weren't for it, then I wouldn't know as much as I do now.
It's something people should learn to value, reaading and learning:)

  7. Yeah, if you really want to be scared, all you have to do is turn on the channel 2 news. I don't think the world is more sick or violent though, we've always been. Its just now being brought out in the open more, with all the news stations trying to tell worse and worse stories. I guess that's what people want to hear about.
